Is he a genius? An attention whore? A trainwreck? The ultimate 21st century anti- superhero? While the press debate the merits of Kanye West’s music and character, 11&more’s Shelly just follows the music by concocting five headpiece creations inspired from Kanye’s past lyrics. Here’s a glimpse into her creative process:
Q: You work with big corporations by day, get inspired by Kanye to make headpieces when you’re off-duty and you do many other things besides. What’s the role of creativity in your life?
Shelly: I hope creativity is a part of everything I do! Both at work and off-duty. For me, creativity is about breaking barriers to experience something new. Most importantly breaking human barriers. Creativity is a way to feel, and empathize with even people who are super different from me.
Q: Why Kanye?
Shelly: He’s really versatile. Using his lyrics was a fun way to explore a wide range of emotions and concepts.
Q: Do you have a favorite piece from this series?
Shelly: Probably the pink roses one. Most people don’t associate Kanye with pink, or roses, but it made sense here. In this verse he recalls visiting his grandmother in the hospital with “flowers,” which shows a softer side of him that’s rarely exposed in the media. I wanted to explore that vulnerable and human side. Also Kanye later in this song refers to his family as “roses”—it’s like he wears his family on his mind like a hat.
Q: What’s the next project you’re working on? Where do you get the inspiration?
Shelly: I’m working on a small animation. It’s inspired by the idea of “fluid identity.” I feel that now, more than ever, we can and we allow ourselves to live/feel vicariously through others. Think celebrities, Youtube videos, social media etc.
